How the Coast Guard PFT is scored
Each event scores from 100 down to 45 points in steps of 5, on tables set by sex and by 11 age groups. Each score also carries an evaluation category and mark.
- SuperiorMark 790 to 100
- ExcellentMark 675 to 85
- Above AverageMark 560 to 70
- AverageMark 445 to 55
- FailureMark 3 for one failed event, 2 for two, 1 for all three or a refusalBelow 45
To pass, a member needs at least the minimum score, 45 points, in each of the three events. Failing any one event fails the test. Direct Access converts each raw score to points and an evaluation mark from Appendices A and B and records the overall mark used on evaluations.
How each Coast Guard PFT event is tested
You complete all three events on the same day, in this order: push-ups, forearm plank, then cardio, with no more than 15 minutes of rest between events.
- Push-upsDo as many as you can in 1 minute, to the standard in the Coast Guard’s Physical Fitness Guide. If you do not complete the event, it scores zero and you fail the PFT.
- Forearm plankHold a forearm plank for as long as you can. Not completing the event scores zero and fails the PFT.
- CardioChoose one: a 1.5-mile run or walk on a course or a treadmill, a 2,000-meter row, or a 500-yard or 450-meter swim. If you do not finish, your time is recorded as 59:59 and you fail the PFT.
Coast Guard body composition standard
The Coast Guard has not adopted the waist-to-height ratio. It screens body composition under COMDTINST 1020.8I in four steps, in order. Passing any step, taken in order, ends the screening.
- 1. Maximum allowable weightWeight at or below the screening weight for your height. Screening weights follow a body mass index of 27.5 at most (19.0 at least), the same for every age and sex.
- 2. Maximum allowable body fatTwo- or three-site tape (by sex), at or below the limit for your age: under 30, 22% for men and 32% for women; 30 to 39, 24% and 34%; 40 and over, 26% and 36%.
- 3. Abdominal circumference39.0 inches or less for men, 35.5 inches or less for women.
- 4. Physical Fitness TestIf medically cleared, the PRP PFT with an average evaluation mark of 5 (Above Average) or higher.
ALCOAST 079/26 says COMDTINST 1020.8I is under review for the DoW waist-to-height ratio change; until further notice, existing policies remain in effect.
Coast Guard PFT standards questions
How often do Coast Guard members take the PFT?
Twice a year for the active component, for reservists on long-term ADOS orders or extended active duty, and for USPHS officers detailed to the Coast Guard. Selected Reserve members take it once a year.
Can I retake a failed PFT?
Yes, once. Ask your unit’s physical readiness leader in writing within 24 hours of the failed test, and take the retake 30 to 60 days later. If you fail the retake as well, the higher overall score of the two tests is the one recorded.
When did the PFT replace the PFA?
On 1 July 2026, under ALCOAST 082/26. The PFT keeps the same three events as the Physical Fitness Assessment: push-ups, plank and cardio.
Do I need a medical screening before the test?
Yes. You complete the pre-screening form, CG-6120, and give a copy to the physical readiness leader before an official PFT.
