How the Air Force PFRA is scored

The PFRA has four components. You do one event in each of the three fitness components, and your waist-to-height ratio scores the fourth. The charts are set by sex and by nine age groups, and the total is out of 100.

  • Cardiorespiratory2-mile run or 20 m HAMRUp to 50
  • Body compositionWaist-to-height ratioUp to 20
  • Muscular strengthPush-ups (1 minute) or hand-release push-upsUp to 15
  • Core enduranceSit-ups (1 minute), cross-leg reverse crunch or forearm plankUp to 15

A passing PFRA needs 75 points or more, with the cardio, strength and core components each at or above their lowest scoring row. Body composition has no minimum, but a waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or above needs a body fat check before the result is final. See AFMAN 36-2905.

PFRA categories

Your total sets your category.

  • Excellent90 to 100 points
  • Satisfactory75 to 89.9 points
  • UnsatisfactoryUnder 75 points. Also Unsatisfactory when any component minimum is not met.

Air Force PFRA events

You pick one event in each fitness component. The charts above score each choice on its own scale.

  • CardiorespiratoryThe 2-mile run or the 20-meter HAMR shuttle run.
  • Muscular strengthPush-ups in 1 minute, or hand-release push-ups.
  • Core enduranceSit-ups in 1 minute, the cross-leg reverse crunch, or the forearm plank.
  • 2-kilometer walkOnly for airmen medically barred from both the run and the HAMR.

2-kilometer walk time limits

The walk is pass or fail and earns no points. Finish within the time for your age and sex.

Air Force body composition standard

On the PFRA, body composition is the fourth scored component, worth up to 20 points.

  • Waist-to-height ratioWHtR is scored on the PFRA, from 20 points at 0.49 or less to 0 at 0.60 or more, truncated to two decimals. At 0.55 or above, a body fat assessment decides the result.
  • How it is measuredWaist at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone. Waist: three measurements, each rounded down to the nearest half inch, averaged and rounded down to the nearest half inch. Height: nearest half inch.
  • At or over the lineAt 0.55 or above, and not meeting PFRA standards, a body fat assessment (InBody scale, or the 2-3 site tape method). Maximum 26% for men and 36% for women.

Waist-to-height ratio points

The same band applies at every age and for both sexes. A ratio at or under the figure shown earns those points.

Air Force PFRA standards questions

Is the minimum in each component enough to pass?

No. AFMAN 36-2905 says the minimum in every fitness component does not add up to 75 points, so you need more than the minimum somewhere.

Is there a minimum for each component?

Yes, for cardio, strength and core. A result below the minimum scores zero for that component, and any component under its minimum makes the PFRA Unsatisfactory. The manual does not print the values; on the charts, the last row of each event is the last that scores. Body composition has no minimum.

Does my waist count toward the PFRA score?

Yes. The waist-to-height ratio is worth up to 20 of the 100 points. At 0.55 or above, if you are not meeting PFRA standards, a body fat assessment follows: at or under 26% for men and 36% for women, body composition counts as an exempt component; above it, the PFRA is Unsatisfactory.

How often do airmen take the PFRA?

Every 6 months after an Excellent or Satisfactory result, and 3 months after an Unsatisfactory one. Air Reserve Component members test every 12 months.

When did scored PFRA testing start?

Scored testing resumed on 1 July 2026. The current scoring charts are dated 17 March 2026.

Does the Space Force take the PFRA?

No. AFMAN 36-2905 does not apply to the Space Force. Guardians take the Human Performance Assessment under SPFMAN 36-2905; see the Space Force HPA rules.
