To join the 75th Ranger Regiment you pass the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and before RASP starts you pass a pre-RASP fitness test: 41 hand-release push-ups, a 2-minute 35-second plank, a 2-mile run, 6 pull-ups and a 6-mile ruck march. The Army’s recruiting page gives no time limit for the run or the ruck march. Inside RASP, the page names three physical events: a 15-meter swim in full uniform, a 5-mile run in under 40 minutes and a 12-mile march with a 35-pound ruck.
The pre-RASP fitness test
These are the five events the Army lists for the pre-RASP test, with the standard where the recruiting page gives one.
- Hand-release push-ups41.
- PlankTwo minutes, 35 seconds.
- Two-mile runThe recruiting page gives no time limit.
- Pull-upsSix.
- Six-mile ruck marchThe recruiting page gives no time limit or ruck weight.

The pre-RASP test is separate from the Army Fitness Test, which you must already pass to apply. Infantryman (11B), one of the MOSs the Regiment hires, is also one of the Army’s 24 combat specialties, so 11B Soldiers pass the AFT on the combat standard; the Army MOS requirements page explains it.
How RASP is structured
The Army describes RASP as a two-phase program. Non-commissioned officers from staff sergeant up, warrant officers and commissioned officers attend RASP 2, a three-week course, instead.
- RASP Phase 1, 5 weeksPhysical and psychological tests, character and leadership assessment, a 12-mile ruck march with a 35-pound dry rucksack in full uniform, land navigation and medical first responder tests.
- RASP Phase 2, 3 weeksSkills training for direct-action combat, airfield seizure, personnel recovery, marksmanship and explosives.
- Ranger School, 61 days (voluntary)Not required to join, but required to lead in the 75th Ranger Regiment.
