Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC) face two fitness tests at different points in a career. To get a SWCC contract, a candidate passes the Physical Screening Test: a 500-yard swim in 13:00, 50 push-ups, 50 curl-ups, 6 pull-ups and a 1.5-mile run in 12:00. Once serving, SWCC are combat arms Sailors under DoW Instruction 1308.03: they pass a Combat Fitness Test once a year and need a combined score of at least 70 on the Navy’s Physical Readiness Test (PRT), with one table for men and women.

The SWCC Physical Screening Test

MILPERSMAN 1220-410 sets these minimums, and candidates must keep meeting them through the training pipeline. The five events run in one session in this order, with rests of 10, 2, 2 and 10 minutes between them. The swim has no overhand recovery: side stroke or breaststroke only.

SWCC Physical Screening Test minimums
Event, in test order SWCC minimum
500-yard swim, side stroke or breaststroke 13:00 or faster
Push-ups in 2 minutes 50
Curl-ups in 2 minutes 50
Pull-ups, no time limit 6
1.5-mile run 12:00 or faster

SEAL candidates take the same test with stricter minimums: a 12:30 swim, 10 pull-ups and a 10:30 run. MILPERSMAN 1220-410 says the minimums can change and that candidates should aim well above them. The Navy rate requirements page lists every program’s minimums.

The SEAL and SWCC Combat Fitness Test

The Navy runs two fitness cycles a year, January to June and July to December. Active-duty SWCC take the Combat Fitness Test in the second. It has four events in one session: an 800-meter swim with fins, then push-ups, pull-ups and a 1-mile run, each done wearing 20 pounds. Men and women use the same table, adjusted for age, and failing one event fails the test. This table shows the lowest passing result in each event for each age group.

The top of the scale, 100 points, is an 11:20 swim, 54 push-ups, 21 pull-ups and an 8:00 run for ages 17 to 29. A failure in the July to December 2026 cycle, the first year of the test, is recorded and puts the Sailor in the Combat Arms Fitness Enhancement Program, the Navy’s remedial training program, but brings no administrative action.

The Physical Readiness Test for serving SWCC

In the January to June cycle, active-duty SWCC take the standard Navy Physical Fitness Assessment: body composition and the Physical Readiness Test. As combat arms Sailors they need a combined score of at least 70 on the test’s three events, scored by age with one table for men and women. Guide-5B prints no separate table for combat arms Sailors; the Navy PRT standards page has the standard tables by age and sex.
