Eleventh. Fifth. First.
That is Niall Darwen’s entire Olympia career, and it took him three trips to Las Vegas. On Friday night the British bodybuilder beat defending champion Ramon Dino, two-time runner-up Mike Sommerfeld and Arnold Classic winner Wesley Vissers to take the 2026 Classic Physique Olympia.
Even we didn’t see it coming. Our 2026 Olympia predictions had him fourth, behind Dino, Sommerfeld and Vissers, and our records preview built its Classic section around those three and Terrence Ruffin. He beat all four.
Two years from the back row to the top step
He arrived in Las Vegas each year off a pro win, and each year he climbed.

Ten places in two years. In Classic Physique, where the same few names have filled the top five for years, that is a sprint.
The spring that should have tipped everyone off
The warning signs were there in May. Darwen won the New York Pro on May 8 and the Pittsburgh Pro eight days later, two of the biggest shows on the calendar.
The headlines went elsewhere. Vissers won the Arnold Classic, Sommerfeld won the Arnold Classic UK, and Dino was the defending champion. Darwen kept winning and kept being described as a contender.
Friday night: not as close as an upset sounds
The first sign came at Friday’s prejudging, when he stood in the middle of the final callout, the spot that usually goes to the man who is winning. Our prejudging report called it a shock. By the finals the judges were running the top five through round after round, and then they called his name.
What set him apart was size. Our results desk called his physique an imposing presence onstage, and Dino, who brought more conditioning than last year, had no answer for it. The official scorecard shows how clear it was at the top:

Lower is better, and three points is a real gap in a five-man final. Sommerfeld finished second for a third straight year. Dino dropped to third. Vissers took fourth, the best Olympia finish of his career. The full scorecard is in our 2026 Classic Physique Olympia results.
He won the room too. In his victory speech he credited Dino, Sommerfeld, Vissers and Ruffin by name.
A first for Classic Physique
Darwen is only the fifth man to win the Classic Physique Olympia, after Danny Hester, Breon Ansley, Chris Bumstead and Dino. He is also the first from outside the Americas: Hester and Ansley are American, Bumstead is Canadian and Dino is Brazilian.
And he is the first British champion in a division that has turned into the most popular men’s class of the weekend. He could have company by Sunday. Samson Dauda goes after the Sandow on Saturday night and Ryan Terry chases a fourth Men’s Physique title, and if both land, Britain leaves Las Vegas holding three Olympia titles.
Now everyone chases him
The hard part of Classic Physique has never been winning one. It is winning two. Only Ansley and Bumstead have done it, and Dino just found out how hard it is.
Darwen goes into 2027 as the man everyone is measuring against. Sommerfeld has spent three years one place short, and Vissers has never been closer. Two years ago none of them needed to know where Niall Darwen was standing in the lineup. Next September they will not be able to look anywhere else.
