The Air Force uses your fitness assessment as a promotion condition, not a score. Under AFI 36-2502, an Airman whose assessment is failed or out of date on the key date is ineligible for promotion, and a failure after selection can delay the promotion or cost it. The assessment adds nothing to the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) score. Score your test with the Air Force PFRA calculator.

When a fitness assessment makes an Airman ineligible

AFI 36-2502 lists a failed or non-current fitness assessment among the conditions that make an Airman ineligible for promotion, and an ineligible Airman cannot test or be considered for promotion. The date the assessment is checked on depends on the grade you are going to.

  • Staff sergeant to chief master sergeantYour assessment must be passed and current on the promotion eligibility cutoff date.
  • Airman to senior airmanYour assessment must be passed and current on your projected promotion date.

Air Force Reserve enlisted members must also keep a current and passing fitness assessment to meet promotion requirements.

A failed assessment after you are selected

If you are selected for promotion to staff sergeant through chief master sergeant and then fail a fitness assessment after the cutoff date, your commander will consider withholding the promotion. The same applies to an airman projected for promotion to airman through senior airman whose most recent assessment is a failure or out of date.

A commander can also defer a promotion to staff sergeant or above for a failed assessment. A deferral delays the promotion and its pay by 1 to 3 months; anything longer needs a waiver. Promotions to grades E-1 through E-4 cannot be deferred.

What the WAPS score counts

Staff sergeant and technical sergeant promotions rank Airmen on a WAPS score with four factors: the Specialty Knowledge Test (up to 100 points), the Promotion Fitness Examination (up to 100), decorations (up to 25) and Enlisted Performance Briefs (up to 285). The fitness assessment is not one of them. The Promotion Fitness Examination is a written test, scored on the percentage of right answers, despite its name.

Space Force Guardians

AFI 36-2502 does not apply to the Space Force. Guardians take the Human Performance Assessment instead; see how a failed HPA can affect a Guardian’s promotion.
