Your record Army Fitness Test is worth up to 120 promotion points toward sergeant and staff sergeant. AR 600-8-19 turns your AFT total into points with one table, Table 3-4, and those points count toward the 800-point promotion point worksheet. Enter your total to see your points and what the next row of the table is worth. For the other branches, see how fitness tests affect military promotion.

Enter your record AFT

Uses Table 3-4 of AR 600-8-19, the same table for promotion to sergeant and to staff sergeant.

Standard you test on

Soldiers in the 24 combat specialties test on the combat standard and need 350 to pass. Everyone else tests on the general standard and needs 300. Table 3-4 is the same for both; the standard only changes what counts as a pass.

Did every event score 60 points or more?

An event below 60 points fails the AFT on either standard.

Your official promotion points are the ones the Army's HR system of record calculates from your records.

How the AFT turns into promotion points

You never enter promotion points yourself. The Army calculates them each month from your records in its personnel system, and an AFT counts only once it is recorded in the Digital Training Management System (DTMS). These are the rules AR 600-8-19 applies to the AFT.

  • Every event must passYou earn AFT points only when every event reaches the minimum passing score, which is 60 points on either standard. A passing record fitness test is also one of the conditions for being recommended for promotion to sergeant or staff sergeant.
  • Your last record test countsThe Army uses your most recent record AFT, even when an earlier test in the past 12 months scored higher.
  • Permanent profilesAn event a permanent profile waives, or an alternate aerobic event you pass, counts as 60 points. The events you perform count at their actual scores.
  • Temporary profilesIf a temporary profile keeps you from a record test, the Army uses your last record score as long as it is no more than a year old. If you had the chance to take a record test and failed it, or missed it through your own negligence, you come off the recommended list.
  • Pregnancy and postpartumDuring a pregnancy profile or the Army Pregnancy Postpartum Physical Training Program, your last record score counts for up to 2 years. Once it is more than a year old, your commander must sign a memorandum to extend it.

AFT promotion points by total (Table 3-4)

Each row is a range of AFT totals and the promotion points it earns. Sergeant and staff sergeant use the same table. It starts at 300 because five events at 60 points or more always add up to at least 300.

Where the AFT sits on the promotion point worksheet

Promotion to sergeant and staff sergeant runs on an 800-point worksheet. The AFT shares the military training category with weapons qualification, and it is worth up to 120 points at both ranks. The table shows the most each category can add for each rank.

Once you are on the promotion recommended list, your points take effect on the first day of the following month. Each month Headquarters, Department of the Army sets a cutoff score for every military occupational specialty (MOS), and every fully qualified soldier at or above the cutoff for their MOS is selected for promotion that month. When an MOS has no requirement for promotions, its cutoff is set at 798.

The combat standard and AFT promotion points

In the 24 combat specialties, the combat standard sets the pass at 350. A soldier who meets the general standard but not the combat standard is subject to in-service reclassification under Army Directive 2025-06. The Army’s AFT page says soldiers compete for promotion in their MOS whichever standard they take, and Table 3-4 is the same for both.

AFT points and sergeant first class and above

The AFT points stop at staff sergeant. Promotion to sergeant first class, master sergeant and sergeant major goes through centralized evaluation boards, and the Army’s AFT page says the AFT has no impact on centralized promotions.
