The Coast Guard records your Physical Fitness Test (PFT) on your evaluation, and failing it has consequences, but it does not stop you competing for advancement. Under COMDTINST 6100.1, an enlisted member who is non-compliant can still compete for advancement, cannot be frocked or given a ceremonial advancement until compliant again, and is processed for separation after three non-compliant cycles in a row. Score your test with the Coast Guard PFT calculator.
How the Coast Guard PFT goes on your evaluation
Your official PFT score, or your retake score, must be recorded on your evaluation report, using the official test completed closest to the end of the evaluation period. Practice tests do not count.
- A passRecorded at the evaluation mark Direct Access calculates from the scoring tables in the Instruction.
- A failRecorded as 3 with one event failed, 2 with two events failed, and 1 with all three failed. Refusing or missing a required PFT without a waiver or exemption is also a 1.
- Compliant againA member who passes a later PFT within the same evaluation testing cycle can receive a 4.
- Waived or exemptA member who could not test because of a waiver or exemption is marked “not observed”.

When a Coast Guard member becomes non-compliant
A failed official PFT is not yet non-compliance. You can ask, in writing and within 24 hours, for one official retake, taken 30 to 60 days after the failed test and within the same testing cycle. You become non-compliant when you fail that retake or decline to take it, and you stay non-compliant until you pass an official PFT.
