Regan Grimes is taking a page out of Phil Heath’s legendary bodybuilding playbook. In a recent video shared on January 27, 2025, Grimes walked fans through his Heath-inspired 2016 leg workout ahead of his next contest at the New York Pro.
Grimes continues to improve his physique under the IFBB Pro League banner. With Classic lines and top-notch muscle separation, he’s quickly become one to watch over the years. In 2023, he battled with Nathan De Asha at the Flex Weekend Italy Pro but came up short in second place.
Having paid attention to what went wrong, Regan Grimes bounced back a week later, earning gold over De Asha at the 2023 Europa Pro. He displayed one of his most ripped and complete packages to date. When it was time to shine on the Mr. Olympia stage that same season, Grimes showcased newfound muscularity and size to clinch ninth place.
After taking time away from the stage, his sights are set on his next contest. Grimes has teased the public with groundbreaking physique updates, tipping the scales at a monstrous 300 pounds. He announced his plan to compete at the upcoming 2025 New York Pro, where he’ll aim to capture his Olympia qualification.

Regan Grimes Replicates Phil Heath’s ‘Prime’ 2016 Leg Workout Ahead of 2025 New York Pro
In a recent YouTube video, Regan Grimes shared his leg day workout, which was inspired by bodybuilding legend Phil Heath’s 2016 leg training routine.
“We are hitting a leg workout today. But not just any ordinary leg day, we are doing Phil Heath’s leg workout from about 10 years ago. It’ll put around 2013-2016 in there somewhere, in his prime, when he was winning the Olympia.”
Regan Grime’s Heath-Inspired Leg Day Workout
- Leg Extensions — 5 set for 12 reps
- Barbell Squats — 4 sets for 20 reps
- Vertical Leg Press – 7 sets for 10 reps
- Walking Lunges — 4 sets 12 reps
- Calf Raise Machine
Leg Extensions
Kicking things off, Grimes explains while doing leg extensions that he has been tinkering with all-out and back-off sets.
“The pump is going to be nasty. Phil’s style of training was not to go as heavy as possible. A lot of people these days are going one set all out. Maybe a back off set or two full sets of all out as heavy as you can go. I’ve been doing a little bit of that as well just to try it out for myself.”
“I guarantee this works too. I think it’s good to mix it up. His biggest thing was staying injury-free.”
Barbell Squats
With the barbell squats, Grimes takes a two-minute resting period instead of Heath’s usual one-minute.
“I think we’re going to take a little longer than a 60-second break. I’m going to aim for about two minutes, which is still a short break for a squat set.”
Vertical Leg Press
While doing vertical leg presses, Regan Grimes remembers when he did 315-pound box squats and acknowledges how nice his current routine is.
“When you think about it, 80 reps on the squat, that’s a lot of freakin reps. That’s a lot of reps but we did it. We got it done.”
“I remember back in the day I did 315 ten by ten on a box squat. That was hard,” he shared. “This is like the vertical, when you stop at 10 reps, it’s obviously easier than going 15-20 but it feels nice.”
Walking Lunges
Grimes adjusts Phil Heath’s walking lunges by using a bar for more support.
“The only difference between his workout and mine is I’m going to be using this bar. I find it a little bit easier for me to hold onto.”
Calf Raise Machine
Finally, Grimes finishes off his Heath-inspired workout with the calf raise machine, explaining that he focuses on the calves at least twice a week.
“I had to toss in a few sets of calves just because I can’t neglect my calves. My calves are like not bad body part but not a strong body part so I need to make sure I get those in at least twice a week.”
Regan Grimes is laser-focused on preparing his physique for the upcoming New York Pro, with fans eagerly awaiting his return to the stage. However, Grimes recently took a break from his intense prep to share his predictions for the 2025 Arnold Classic alongside Samson Dauda, and unsurprisingly, both men picked Dauda to win.
With the 2025 New York Pro just around the corner, Regan Grimes is primed to showcase his best physique yet, aiming to secure his ticket to the prestigious Olympia. The countdown is on for May 17 in Teaneck, New Jersey, and fans can’t wait to see what Grimes has in store for his highly anticipated return.
